Harry Kane has not returned to train with Tottenham ahead of the 2020-21 season as he pushes to move away from the North London club. The Premier League side’s players who were part of the final stages of Euro 2020 and Copa America were to return to training on Monday, but a notable absentee was the English forward.
The England captain was to report to Spurs to get medical tests done ahead of the Premier League season. Reports suggest that Kane chose not to appear for training to send a message to the club’s chairman Daniel Levy. The report further states that Chelsea and Manchester City – who are both looking for a striker in the current transfer window – are taking a close look at the situation.
Spurs reportedly want a massive fee of £150 million for the 28-year-old forward, but City – who are keen on signing him – want to pay only £100 million for him. Spurs are not willing to sell their talisman for less than what they are demanding. The striker still has three years remaining on his current deal at the club, which gives Spurs the advantage on the negotiating table.
Kane has been one of, if not, the most important players for Spurs over the last few seasons. The Englishman came through the ranks at the North London club and has gone on to make 336 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring 221 goals and making 47 assists. Kane has scored the second-most goals for Tottenham of all time, 45 goals behind the legendary Jimmy Greaves.
Manchester City seems to be the favorites to sign the English forward as they are in desperate need of a forward before the 2021-22 season. Pep Guardiola’s side waltzed to the Premier League title last season and the Catalan coach played several games without a striker, using midfielders in the False 9 position.
But, Guardiola knows that he needs a top-class center forward to continue their domestic success, while also capturing the Champions League, which has eluded them so far. The exit of Sergio Aguero and the inconsistent form of Gabriel Jesus has made signing a striker a priority for City.
Kane is a fan favorite at Tottenham, but he could be the arch-enemy for Spurs fans if he exits the club in acrimonious circumstances. Tottenham faces Manchester City in the season opener on August 15, which could see Kane line up against his old team.
