Christian Eriksen returns to training for the first time after cardiac arrest

Danish footballer Christian Eriksen has returned to training for the first time since he suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch earlier this year. The Inter Milan midfielder has trained with former club Odense this week, six months after falling to the ground during the match against Finland at Euro 2020. Eriksen’s agent Martin Schoots has revealed that the 29-year-old is currently focused on his recovery but says it is too early to talk about a return to the pitch for him.

“As every person that went through what happened to him, he is focusing on his recovery. He likes to do it privately, either in Milan or in Denmark. When he is in his home country, he can use the Odense facilities, which is a great gesture by his former team. Chris has a positive attitude. He is optimistic and energetic. But it is not yet time to talk about football. It is only up to him to decide when and if that will happen,” said Schoots.

The Dane was a part of Odense’s academy for a few years in the 2000s before he made the switch to Ajax. Michael Hemmingsen, the sporting director of the Danish football club, is pleased that Eriksen has begun training once again and has offered the former Tottenham player the freedom to train at the club’s facilities.

“We are happy that Eriksen is keeping himself in shape on our pitches. We have stayed in touch with him since he left our youth academy. We are happy he asked to train here,” said Hemmingsen.

The Danish club has revealed that Eriksen reached out to them to train at the club and that he has been training alone. A return to the pitch for the 29-year-old, though, will take some time as he will not be allowed to play with Inter Milan in the Serie A, due to the league’s rules. The Italian league prohibits players from playing with a cardioverter-defibrillator.

Eriksen was fitted with the cardioverter-defibrillator back in June following his cardiac arrest. The midfielder had to be fitted with the device due to rhythm disturbances in his heart, which resulted in having a cardiac arrest.

The Danish international has been with Inter Milan since January 2020, having joined the Italian club from Tottenham. He has played 60 times for the club and played a part in Inter winning the Serie A in the 2020-21 Serie A season.
