Christian Eriksen: Inter Milan midfielder returning for tests to determine if career can resume

Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen will return to his club Inter Milan next week. He will have medical tests to determine if he will be able to return to playing for the Italian giants.

Sky Sports has reported that Inter doctors will have to be convinced that Eriksen can play without a defibrillator, which was fitted to him following his collapse during the game against Finland in Euro 2020. Eriksen had a cardioverter-defibrillator or ICD, fitted to him after he suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch.

The report further states that Eriksen will not be able to get on the football pitch at Inter for the next 6 months even if he is passed fit by the club’s doctors. Dr. Francesco Braconaro, who is a part of the Italian football federation’s medical committee, recently stated that Eriksen will only be allowed to play in Serie A if his defibrillator is removed.

“In Italy, we have very conservative guidelines regarding the health of players. Christian Eriksen cannot be eligible [to play in Serie A]. If the player has the defibrillator removed, therefore confirming the pathology can be resolved, then he can return to play for Inter,” said Braconaro.

Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest just minutes before half-time in Denmark’s opening group stage match against Finland at Euro 2020. The Inter Milan midfielder had to be resuscitated on the pitch and was later taken to hospital, where his condition stabilized. He later had surgery to place the ICD in his body, which will track his heart rate.

Eriksen was a key player for the Denmark national team and greatly influenced their performances on the pitch. The Danes lost the game against Finland after it was restarted following the Eriksen scare, and then lost their next game to Belgium as well. But, a solid win against Russia helped them progress to the knockout phases of Euro 2020.

They romped past Wales and then the Czech Republic to book their place in the semi-finals of the competition, where they lost to England in extra time.

Eriksen had come into Euro 2020 on a high as he helped Inter Milan win the Serie A for the first time since 2010, while also helping them to the Europa League final. The 29-year-old had joined Inter from English side Tottenham in the 2020 January transfer window, which ended his six-and-a-half-year spell at the North London club.
