Scherzer, other latest $100M contracts not on All-Star teams

In his return to the mound, Max Scherzer threw six shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out 11.

Because of his extended absence due to an oblique injury, the three-time Cy Young Award winner will miss out on an All-Star berth in his debut season with the New York Mets. Despite just making his ninth start of the year, Scherzer was 5-1 with a 2.26 ERA entering last Tuesday’s game in Cincinnati as the NL starter.

The first year of Scherzer’s $130 million, three-year contract has paid him a season-record $43.3 million. Nevertheless, he isn’t the only player that signed a huge deal before the 2022 season and was left out of the All-Star lineups published on Sunday.

Nobody else who signed contracts worth at least $100 million, whether in free agency or to stay with their current teams, is scheduled to be at Dodger Stadium on July 19. Freddie Freeman, Nick Castellanos, and Marcus Semien are just three of the players who were All-Star starts for their prior teams last year.
