Mahomes throws for 3 TDs, Chiefs overwhelm Buccaneers 41-31
The same stadium where Tom Brady handed Patrick Mahomes one of his most humiliating losses was the scene of Mahomes’ latest victory, as he had all the solutions for defeating Tampa Bay’s stout defense.
Mahomes led the Chiefs to a 41-31 victory over the Buccaneers on Sunday night with a passing performance that included 249 yards and three touchdown passes, one of which was an electric jump pass to Clyde Edwards-Helaire.
Four days after Hurricane Ian devastated parts of Florida, Mahomes made NFL history by becoming the fastest player to 20,000 passing yards. He did so while throwing touchdown passes of 16 yards to Travis Kelce, 1 yard to Edwards-Helaire, and 10 yards to Jody Fortson at a sold-out Raymond James Stadium.
The Chiefs (3-1) beat the Patriots (1-3) in the first meeting between Mahomes and Brady since the Super Bowl two years ago, which was also played at Raymond James Stadium, and which Tampa Bay won 31-9. Both running backs, Edwards-Helaire and tight end Noah Gray, scored touchdowns for the Chiefs.
“When I came into the stadium I realized that I hadn’t been here and the bad taste I had last time came into effect,” Mahomes said. “But it’s still not a playoff game. It’s a regular-season game, which is important. That Super Bowl will always leave a bad taste for me.”
