Goalie carousel continues spinning on Day 2 of NHL draft

A flurry of deals and agreements added two more goalies to the rotating goalkeeper carousel on Friday, even before the NHL draft got underway.

Vitek Vanecek, a goaltender who had been a free agency with the Washington Capitals, was dealt by the St. Louis Blues to the Detroit Red Wings, who promptly signed him to a three-year contract.

The Colorado Avalanche, fresh off their Stanley Cup victory, acquired Alexandar Georgiev from the New York Rangers on Thursday. After making this transfer, Darcy Kuemper was certain to be a free agent.

Many teams are eager in acquiring Kuemper or other goaltenders who are up for grabs in trade or via free agency.

Before Detroit handed the 73rd choice to St. Louis for the 27-year-old Finn, Husso was one of those alternatives. He signed a three-year agreement worth $14.25 million with a $4.75 million yearly salary cap hit.

Red Wings signed Alex Nedeljkovic in the summer and will now pair Husso with him as they go from rebuilding to contending.

That may be a few years away, but the Devils needed a goalie and acquired one in Vanecek along with the 46th selection after trading away Nos. 37 and 70 to the Washington Capitals. The Washington Capitals are looking for a senior goaltender to play with Ilya Samsonov, unless they decide to part ways with him as well.
