Former Pakistan cricketer and commentator Ramiz Raja to be new PCB Chairman

Pakistani World Cup-winner and commentator Ramiz Raja will be appointed the new Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Raja is likely to replace current Chairman, Ehsan Mani, in the coming days, following his meeting with Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Khan, who is the Patron-in-Chief of the PCB, had a meeting with Raja earlier this week, where the two discussed the future of cricket in the country. Raja is set to be appointed as the Board of Governors of the PCB, which will eventually see him become the Chairman of the PCB.

In a recent interview, Ramiz Raja revealed that in his meeting with the Pakistan PM, he outlined a roadmap for Pakistan cricket.

“I did meet with the PM and presented him with a roadmap for how Pakistan cricket can go forward. It was a cricket-centric discussion on the problems Pakistan cricket is facing and what possible steps can be taken to improve the overall performance. I am glad he called me up and heard me out. He is concerned about the state of cricket overall and is open to discussion,” said Raja.

Raja believes that Pakistan cannot make it to the finals of various ICC tournaments due to their inconsistency over the years. He thinks that they only have a slight chance in the T20 format but need to improve significantly in Tests and ODIs.

Ramiz Raja has been involved with Pakistan cricket for decades, first as a player, and later as a commentator. He was a part of the triumphant 1992 World Cup squad where he scored two centuries and even took the last catch in the final. Since his retirement, he has been the voice of Pakistan cricket and commentated in various ICC tournaments.

Meanwhile, outgoing PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani was offered a one-year contract which he has reportedly rejected. He was offered a one-year deal as opposed to the usual three-year deal that is offered to the Chairman position. Mani took charge of the role of PCB Chairman in 2018 from Najam Sethi. Mani was previously the President of ICC for three years between 2003 and 2006.

Pakistan hasn’t tasted a lot of success in recent years, with their most recent success coming in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy when they defeated arch-rivals India in the final. They can, however, be dark horses in the T20 format and could spring a surprise at the T20 World Cup, which will be held in UAE and Oman later this year.
