Elliott won’t celebrate gifted Pocono win after Hamlin DQ

Chase Elliott was named the winner of the Pocono Raceway race when he arrived back in his home state of Georgia.

For the time being.

NASCAR’s decision to revoke Denny Hamlin’s victory and Kyle Busch’s second-place finish on Sunday after their Toyotas failed inspections can still be appealed by Joe Gibbs Racing. Since Emanuel Zervakis’ victory at Wilson Speedway in North Carolina on April 17, 1960, when his victory was taken away due to an excessive fuel tank, Hamlin was the first Cup champion to be disqualified.

As a result, the Toyotas were sent to NASCAR’s research and development facility in North Carolina for additional review, which may take up to a week, depending on the outcome of any appeals.

Hendrick Motorsports driver Elliott, driving his No. 9 Chevrolet, was handed his fourth victory of the season despite not leading a lap on Sunday. Even if he isn’t thrilled about winning without a checkered flag, the series points leader will take the victory anyway.

Elliot stated Monday that he was “probably just more astonished by it than anything.” In my opinion, no one wants to win in that manner. “No, I don’t,” I reply.

The NASCAR inspection team discovered problems with both Toyotas that compromised their aerodynamics after Hamlin and the rest of the field had already left Pocono.
