Browns trade quarterback Baker Mayfield to Panthers

Published on

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield was dealt to the Carolina Panthers on Wednesday for a future draft selection, thus ending his tumultuous time in Cleveland.

A conditional draft selection in 2024 or 2025 will be exchanged for Mayfield, who was pushed out of the starting quarterback position by the Cleveland Browns’ pursuit of Deshaun Watson.

According to a person familiar with the discussions, the Browns have agreed to pay $10 million of Mayfield’s $18.8 million salary for the 2019 season. In order for the deal to be completed, Mayfield must undergo a physical examination.

However, the Panthers, who will play the Browns in the season’s first game, confirmed the deal. Mayfield’s inclusion to the battle will certainly spice things up.

In March, the Cleveland Browns traded three first-round picks and six overall to Houston for Watson, who is facing a probable NFL ban for violating the league’s personal conduct code. Mayfield’s career with the Browns basically ended at that point. Two dozen Texas massage therapists have accused Watson of sexual assault; he has resolved 20 of 24 cases and rejects the claims.
