A new Schumacher targets a move to F1

The Schumacher name ruled F1 for a long time, as racing legend Michael Schumacher ran away with victory after victory and racked up seven world titles. Schumacher’s brother, Ralf, did not have as much success as his older brother, but had a decent run in F1, winning seven races.

Now, Ralf’s son David Schumacher has set his sights on reaching F1 following his first win in the F3 Championship earlier this year. The 19-year-old is in his third season of F3 and won his first F3 race at the Red Bull Ring.

In a recent interview, David Schumacher stated that his goal is to reach F1 soon.

”My goal is to get to Formula 1. When you have invested so much, there can be no other goal. The pressure was always there, but the win did provide some relief. I knew what I could do, but I drive more relaxed now,” said Schumacher.

Schumacher moved to the Trident racing team for the 2021 F3 season, after racing for Charouz and Carlin Buzz Racing last season. He didn’t have a strong season last time around and didn’t score a single point. His fortunes changed after moving to Trident as he got closer to the points before securing his first points of the season with his win in Austria.

In the last round at Hungary, he scored points in all three races, with his best being a fourth-place finish.

The young Schumacher began his racing career alongside his cousin and son of Michael Schumacher, Mick. Mick Schumacher is currently in F1, racing for the Haas F1 team after a fantastic season in F2 where he won the Driver’s title. The Haas driver had also won the F3 Championship a year prior to that, which allowed him to progress to F2 and then F1.

Like Mick, David Schumacher will also have to get a few more wins to secure a seat in the hugely competitive F2 Championship.

Mick Schumacher, meanwhile, is likely to stay in F1 as Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto recently confirmed discussions between the team and Haas to extend Schumacher’s stay at the team. Schumacher is a part of the Ferrari Driver Academy, which helped him secure a seat in Haas, who has close ties with the Ferrari F1 team.

In his first season in F1, Mick Schumacher has outshone his teammate Nikita Mazepin. He has also finished every race so far in the season, with his best finish coming last time around at Hungary where he ended the race in 12th position.
