Women’s NCAA Tournament to play at one site, eyes on Texas

With the way things are going in this environment, UConn coach Geno Auriemma said it makes better sense to have the NCAA women’s basketball tournament.

  • The NCAA announced that San Antonio is looking to be the host site for the 64-team tournament next March. Also, the men’s tournament would be in one central spot in Indianapolis. Of course, this is to limit the risk of COVID-19.
  • Auriemna said it just made sense to have everything in one spot, especially for a large set of teams with the same set of protocols.
  • Even with San Antonio already the site of the 2021 Final Four,  The NCAA and the city is in the works to host the whole March Madness. This may even stretch to Austin because they need hotels, practice spots, and venues.
  • Baylor coach Kim Mulkey said, “I’m not surprised.” It’s going to be interesting to navigate things to ensure teams get sufficient practice, gyms, and everything within this COVID running rampant. She said at least it’s close to home.
  • The original plan for the the tournament was more along the lines of selecting some cities, such as, Albany, New York, Austin, Texas, Cincinnati and Spokane, Washington. However, making the difficult decision now is better to help prepare for host communities and different guidelines.
  • The schedule will be difficult to tell because it could be a bit shorter due to the health and safety of the players.
  • NCAA senior Vice President Lynn Holzman said there a lot of logistics to go through, which the main one is how they would deal with a tournament team catching the virus? Right now the answer is up in the air.
