Mets place Scherzer on 15-day IL with left oblique injury

On Wednesday, the New York Mets placed pitcher Max Scherzer on the 15-day disabled list due to “left oblique discomfort,” as the team put it.

The change is effective back to September 4, the day after Scherzer left his start against Washington after five innings due to left side pain. A left oblique injury caused the 38-year-old to miss nearly two months of action earlier in the season. According to Scherzer, this injury is distinct and not as serious.

Before Wednesday’s split doubleheader between New York and Pittsburgh, Scherzer stated, “This is days, not weeks, that’s the first and main thing.”

To make sure the problem is completely rectified before the postseason starts, Mets manager Buck Showalter anticipates Scherzer to miss at least one start and probably two. The game in Miami on Friday was set to kick off with Scherzer. There is currently no information regarding the replacement starter for Scherzer.

With four weeks left in the season, the Mets’ three-game losing streak had them tied for first place in the NL East with Atlanta, which was on a tear.

For New York, Scherzer has made 20 starts and has a 9-4 record with a 2.26 ERA. Near the end of his start against Washington, when he gave up one run in five innings before leaving the game, he mentioned feeling worn out in his left side. The three-time Cy Young Award winner stated that staying in to pitch has left him with “no regrets.”
