Cubs’ Kyle Hendricks goes on injured list with sore shoulder

When Kyle Hendricks left his Tuesday night start early because of a strained throwing shoulder, he was placed on the Cubs’ disabled list.

With just three innings of work, Hendricks gave up eight runs in the Cubs’ 8-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. As expected, his pitching velocity was lower than usual.

It was the first time Hendricks, 32, could sense anything was awry when he threw his first warmup throw at the outset of the game on Tuesday night. In early June, Hendricks had a similar shoulder problem and missed 12 races as a result.

This season, Hendricks has a 4-6 record and a 4.80 ERA.

Prior to their game against Milwaukee on Wednesday afternoon, Cubs manager David Ross remarked that “being conservative, dealing with this a little bit before, we have the All-Star break coming up, giving him a little rest and building him back up is the smartest approach.”

Hendricks has stated that he expects to get an MRI done on himself. Earlier this week, Ross stated that the exam had not yet taken place.

Right-hander Anderson Espinoza was called up from Double-A Tennessee to take Hendricks’ place on the roster.

The Cubs’ pitching staff has been hampered by a slew of ailments. Drew Smyly and Marcus Stroman are also on the disabled list since they are teammates of Hendricks.
