USA could host their first-ever major ICC event in 2024, as reports suggest that they and West Indies could host the 2024 T20 World Cup.
As per a recent report, the ICC is keen on expanding and popularizing cricket in the US, ahead of the 2028 Olympics, which will be held in Los Angeles. The ICC wants cricket to be included in the 2028 edition of the summer Olympics.
“There are multiple reasons for ICC’s interest in the US. The global cricket community has been targeting the American market for quite some time. And more significant are the ICC’s Olympic ambitions, which may become reality at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. Given the Olympic hopes, allotting the 2024 championship may make sense,” said the report.
The report further highlights that ICC has dropped hints to cricket broadcasters about possibly awarding the 2024 T20 World Cup hosting rights to US and West Indies.
“Cricbuzz also learns from potential broadcasters of the world who have been hinted by the ICC that the 2024 Twenty20 World Cup could go to the US and West Indies. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may get the last event of the cycle, the 2031 50-over World Cup, as it would be hosting the 2023 edition,” the report further said.
The US men’s cricket team has never competed or hosted a Cricket World Cup, but if they do host the 2024 T20 World Cup, they will receive direct entry due to being hosts.
The announcement could be made as early as next week when the ICC has scheduled a few meetings. There could be announcements regarding the hosting rights for the next cycle of ICC events.
The 2024 T20 Cricket World Cup will be the first competition where 20 teams will compete for the T20 World Cup trophy. 55 teams in total will compete for the World Cup, with 20 eventually qualifying for the final stages of the tournament.
The T20 World Cup will be held every two years, and the ICC announced earlier this year that it will be a 20-team event until the 2030 edition of the tournament. The World Cup will consist of five groups with four teams in each group. The top two from each group will progress to the Super 8s, and then the semi-finals and final.
The next T20 World Cup will be held in 2022 in Australia, and 16 teams will take part in the competition.
