This year’s women’s singles winner at the US Open, Emma Raducanu, has revealed that she has yet to see the trophy that she won. The Brit recently stated that she has given the trophy to the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) as a sign of gratitude for everything they have done for her.
Following her match at the Transylvania Open, Raducanu said that the trophy she had won at Flushing Meadows was directly shipped to the LTA’s National Tennis Center after her win.
“I just thought the LTA had done so much for me and I just wanted them to have it as a sign for everything they had done for me through the young ages. They played a huge role in my development, so it’s a little gift.
“I haven’t actually seen it. I got it shipped straight to the NTC, so I can’t wait to go. I don’t know if it’s there right now, but that’s the address. I just thought it was a nice gift and a nice moment. I think they’ve (LTA) done a lot for me, so it was just a token of appreciation. A special one,” said Raducanu.
The 18-year-old won the maiden trophy of her professional tennis career at the US Open in September. She defeated Canadian Leylah Fernandez in straight sets in the tournament’s final to become the first Brit to win a Grand Slam since 1977.
This past week, Raducanu secured her first WTA Tour win when she defeated Polona Hercog in her first-round match at the Transylvania Open. The teen was ecstatic at winning her first WTA Tour match, especially considering she lost the first set of the tie.
She also won the Round of 16 matches against Romania’s Ana Bogdan in straight sets to enter the quarter-finals of the tournament. Raducanu, who is of Romanian heritage, was pleased to be playing in the country where her father came from. The Brit is the third seed in the singles draw at the 2021 Transylvania Open.
Raducanu believes that she will need to play consistently to get better physically, which she wants to work on during the off-season. She is also searching for a new coach and hopes to find one before the 2022 Australian Open. Raducanu has trialed with a few coaches so far, one of whom was Esteban Carril, the ex-coach of Johanna Konta. The 18-year-old, though, has yet to sign a coach to replace her former coach Andrew Richardson.
